Investment & Private Equity
Private equity vs. stocks and ETFs: key differences
Compare liquidity, diversification, costs, transparency and access across investment types.
Trading and liquidity
Listed shares and many ETFs can generally be traded on exchange trading days, although prices fluctuate and liquidity can vary. Private equity interests are typically harder to sell.
The ability to trade does not eliminate investment risk. Selling listed investments during a downturn may still lock in substantial losses.
Diversification and transparency
Broad-market ETFs may hold many securities, while a single private company investment can create significant concentration risk. Private equity funds differ widely in portfolio composition.
Public markets generally provide frequent prices and standardized disclosures. Private investments may rely on periodic valuations and less frequent reporting.
Fees and suitability
Costs, minimum investments, legal structures and investor eligibility differ. Comparing only headline returns without accounting for fees, risk and liquidity can be misleading.
