Strength training and muscle health as we age
Why strength, balance and progressive training matter for maintaining independence with age.
Why muscle matters
Muscle strength supports everyday activities such as standing up, climbing stairs and carrying groceries. Age-related declines can increase the risk of functional limitations.
Resistance training can improve strength at many ages. Results depend on regular participation, appropriate progression, nutrition and recovery.
Train progressively and safely
Exercises may use body weight, resistance bands, machines or free weights. Start with a manageable level and gradually increase the challenge as technique and tolerance improve.
Balance exercises and everyday movement complement strength training. People with significant symptoms or medical limitations should seek professional guidance before changing their program.
Recovery is part of progress
Training adaptations occur over time. Rest, sufficient food and sleep help support consistent participation; persistent pain is a reason to adjust training and seek assessment.
